Is Wishing the Anime World Was a Reality a Good Thing?

Nico Nico Eldries

Ever had days where you wish that you could be as strong as Goku? Or even wished that Gundam Wings were real? Have you ever thought that your ‘reality’ is so boring that if you had the chance to wish for your aspects of your favorite Anime to come to life, your ‘reality’ wouldn’t be so boring anymore? Many of us, if not all of us, have had times in our lives where we wanted things to be different. We wished that hover boards or cool robots existed, or that we had super human powers. It wouldn’t be surprising if anyone had at one point wished to have special traits or aspects of our lives, or even aspects of ourselves, changed. However what always brings us back from the fantasy to the reality, is that cold truth that these things won’t ever exist because it’s not humanly possible. Imagine to yourselves for a minute that by some lucky break in the universe, you came across a way to have your favorite Anime, or even certain traits of that Anime become a reality. Imagine you could wish to have the strength and fighting prowess of Saitama, or one of your favorite ‘Waifu’ come to life, or even have the NerveGear system in Sword Art Online come to fruition. The possibilities are endless, yet a question comes to mind; is it really a good thing to have these aspects merge or become a reality?

The short answer to all of this is, ‘it really depends on which Anime or which aspect you want to come to life’. The reason why I say that it depends, is totally because of the fact that each Anime is different. Wishing to have Vertical Maneuvering Equipment has a different implication as to wishing Poke’mon existed. Essentially it comes down to consequence, impact, and severity.

The consequence of that ‘thing’ existing in this world has great implications on not only, your reality, but everyone. If I could use an example as wishing a Death Note existed in your reality. The questions then begin to arise; What would you do with it? Use it do end wars before they happen? Bring swift justice to those that had committed crimes? Stop bullying? Make the world a much better place? Sounds a bit like the situation with Light Yagami, and we all know how that turned out (if you don’t watch Death Note XD). But one can always argue, you have it under control, or you won’t take it to that level of extreme, but who is to say that things won’t get to that level? Choice is always a weird thing to play around with, we can choose the action, but we can’t choose the consequences. One of the consequences that come to mind would be the sudden existence of Shinigami like Ryuk (given that they don’t already exist and we just don’t know). Who is to say then that other people won’t get Death Notes? Now this has just blown out of proportion because there are certain consequences and implications that we didn’t think about initially. Another example of consequence would then be wishing we had Magical Powers. A great anime that can help put this into perspective is Puella Magi Madoka Magica (or Madoka the Magical Girl). This is a great example of the consequences of wishing can turn into.

Another question to really consider is, how would this wish impact reality? Positively or Negatively? I can do a lot of good with super powers, but I could also cause a lot of grief. In wishing for the super powers alone, would that cause the Universe to try and balance out the equation and thus other super humans are made? Would that mean I have a responsibility associated with these super powers? Even more questions come to light. Let’s use another example of wishing that you could make the NerveGear gaming system in Sword Art Online was a reality. You’d be ridiculously rich, and the gaming community would love you for it. However, would that further increase humanity’s dependence on technology in a good way or a bad way? It impacts greatly on you and your society, all because of a simple wish to have that system become a reality. Even simply wishing you could play basketball like Kuroko or any of the Generation of MIracles from Kuroko no Basuke would impact greatly. It would change the way we play the game forever. But is that change really a good thing?

Now depending on how big or small the wish is, can determine how severe the impact and consequences will be. When I say severe I mean how large or small the impact, and/or consequence will be. Lets take another example; let’s wish that you could be a ninja like Naruto. This would mean that the Hidden Villages would become a reality, a hierarchy such as the Kages would then come into play and lots of other changes would occur as well. See how this simple wish can have severe impacts and consequences? Let’s opt for something a little smaller, like wishing you can cook like Souma from Food Wars. Well, first off, be ready to see people getting ughhh…sexually aroused(?) because of your cooking. Second, what will you do with it? Cook for family, set up a restaurant? Either way, because of that change, even though it is a small thing, consequences tend to ripple out and impact others as well.

The last thing I want to talk about is why we wish for these changes to happen. This type of thinking is Escapism. We want to ‘escape’ from our realities and be like someone else. The extreme would be to wish to become someone else entirely. We find a lot of faults in our reality that we want to change, and seek a better us. I will conclude here by saying that there isn’t anything wrong with wishing that we had super powers, or to wish that hover boards existed. It’s human nature, and we seek for improvement because of our wishes and dreams. It is never wrong to dream, or to wish, for these will lead us to our ‘better’ selves. However if you ever come across 7 Dragon Balls and wish to change the world so that your favorite Anime universe comes to life, you may want to consider first the implications of that wish. Had I the opportunity to wish to make the One Punch Man universe come to life, all hell will break lose and we’d get monster attacks left right and center, not to mention I’d be bald. With great power, comes great responsibility. With that said I hope this sheds a bit of light on whether wishing for our favorite anime to become a reality will be a good thing.  We want to know, what would you wish for if you could make any aspect of Anime come to life, let us know in the comments below. Dragon Ball Z: Fall of Men Review

Nico Nico Eldries

Dragon Ball and Anime fans alike, is this an answer to our prayers? Since the release of Dragon Ball Evolution in 2009, many fans (including myself) have been trying to find a way to wash the foul taste it left behind. It seemed that for a long time, the adaptation of our favorite Anime/Cartoons into film has always largely disappointed audiences worldwide. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon, and we found that with this recent fan film done by Black Smoke Films. Dragon Ball Z: Fall of Men covers the story of Trunks, the last remaining Z Fighter and their struggle against the seemingly, unbeatable Cell. Fans of the series will know this plot line from the official Anime movie of Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks. So, just how good is this fan film? Well, I’m both hopeful and critical of the Fan Film. I won’t spoil too much of the short film, but it wasn’t the perfect movie for Dragon Ball Z fans. One can argue that there is no such ‘perfect’ movie and I do understand that, however if we take the example of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s not perfect and there are many things which we would like to change, however, it is suffice, it doesn’t have all fans raging that it was such a bad movie, unlike say, The Last Airbender and Dragon Ball Evolution. It seemed like a step towards something that can truly be great, however Dragon Ball Z: Fall of Men isn’t the end all, be all films to quench our thirst for a grand movie that is ‘worthy’ to emulate the series.

As a fan, my thoughts are that that was a great attempt with the budget which they had. Black Smoke Films deserve to be commended for the effort, skill and time that they put to that movie short. It gave the feel for a movie, and not just some random fan film on Youtube. There was a fantastic use of the soundtrack and the effects, with the budget that they had, was wonderful. As a fan film, that we outstanding effort. However, as a critic, I have a slightly varied thoughts. As a critic, the first thing I would say, is that if you’re hoping for the movie that Dragon Ball Evolution wasn’t, Dragon Ball Z: Fall of Men is not it. As an audience, we need to keep in mind that this is a fan film and there will be discrepancies and things that will be imperfect. As great example of this would be how Cell looked.  He had the body of Perfect Cell, yet the face of Imperfect Cell. Another instance would be when they clash energy beams, I wasn’t sure whether the beams caused an explosion which then caused Trunks to revert back to normal, or he was hit. There were also times when the added effects looked a bit too ‘cartoonish’ and didn’t look like it belonged in the scene. Another discrepancy is the lack of Gohan in the short. Gohan was a key person in Future Trunks’ development. However Black Smoke Films explain that they changed the story slightly to focus more on family ties than on the relationship between with Gohan and Trunks, and that seems to work out well, but without that prior knowledge, it would be a bit confusing for some of the fandom expecting to see Gohan.

The biggest thing to consider is that it is a fan film. Will this mean there is hope for better film adaptations of Anime, or will we have to wait much longer? Personally it’s a glimmer of hope, but it’s still a bit too early to get say that the dry streak is over. Make sure to check out the fan film below and also let us know your opinion in the comments as well. This is your boy, NicoNicoEldries, signing out.

NicoEldries’ Top 10 Anime

Nico Nico Eldries

So, you want to know NicoEldries’ Top 10 anime of all time? Didn’t ask? Well you’re going to get the full list anyway, let’s go! Here is the full list on my Top 10 Favorite anime.

Death Note is unique. Death Note takes you on a journey that no anime (to this date) has done. It takes you through the journey of the villain. It does this in such a well manner that you develop a love/hate relationship with the main character. Light Yagami has to be the most tainted protagonist I’ve ever seen, and his character is amazing. If you have never seen it, I would highly recommend it. It is a must see for all Anime Fans.

This is on the list because the art is just amazing. The title is a play on how long it takes for Sakura (Cherry Blossom) petals fall from the tree to the ground, but the anime isn’t about Cherry Blossoms. Rather it is a look on human relationships, mainly love interests. I won’t spoil it, but it’s visually appealing and a wonder to watch.

Mirai Nikki has to be one of the best Yandere Anime I’ve seen thus far. It’s close to tying with Higurashi’s Ryuuguu Rena, but Mirai Nikki takes the spot because the plot was a bit better. I know Yuno can get a bit annoying with how she calls Yuki, but let’s face it, the story is amazing and Yuno can kick some serious butt. I personally enjoy Mirai Nikki because it’s a great example of how Anime isn’t just for kids, but for adult audiences as well. Plus it’s a bit easier to stomach the scenes in here than when watching Saw or any other gory movie. I could eat dinner normally watching Mirai Nikki, so thank you Anime for helping me eat my dinner properly while watching Thriller/Super Violent and Gory stuff.

Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT and the new Dragon Ball Super is a series I have grown up with. This is where it all started for me, watching Dragon Ball in the morning before going off to school and I loved it. Sure there are far better Anime now, but the vital key to all this can be summarized in one word; nostalgia. I love Dragon Ball and that will never leave me. I will always try to train to defeat Goku (or at least Yamcha), always strive to become a Super Saiyan (or give up and dye my hair blonde) and will continue to tell myself that the plastic Dragon Ball replicas I have will one day grant me my wishes. But regardless, it’s a great anime to watch.

This is another timely classic done by the famous Studio Ghibli. You want an anime movie that has a great story, amazing art and enjoyable, watch Castle in the Sky. For an anime movie that was made in 1986, this is a gem to behold. If i hadn’t told you it was made in 1986, you may not believe it to be from that era of time. I will refrain from saying much more on it, but if you want to learn a bit about Anime History and want to watch a classic, then Laputa will not disappoint.

Kill la Kill is honestly an all in one package. It has everything you need as a male fan; fan service, action, great art style, comedy, character development and a complicated story line that gets you seriously questioning your current beliefs and views. So it’s basically an Anime Matrix but better. Despite the fan service, Kill la Kill has a great plot and the action is great. It honestly is a great anime to watch, just don’t watch it when your parents are around…they will question.

I was honestly never into sports anime until I watched Kuroko no Basuke. It’s action packed, and over exaggerates basketball to such a degree you wish you could play basketball like them. This seriously makes you wish the NBA would add special effects and crap to all the games to make it look colorful and interesting. If you are an NBA fan, watch this at your own risk; it’ll change your ball game forever. All jokes aside, it is a great anime to watch. It really gets you pumped up and want to pick up a basketball.

This anime is another gem. I won’t say too much more, but the plot, characters, art style and overall vibe of this anime is glorious. It’s sad that a second season is unlikely to come out, but it is a great anime to watch.

Right now, this has to be my most favorite anime to watch. One Punch Man just plays to my manliness so much. Super heroes, super villains and the most hilarious protagonist of all time. The plot is simple, yet it’s one of the best (if not the best) Anime released in October 2015. Watch it and see what I mean.

Attack on Titan just has the most appealing plot, characters and art style in my honest opinion. You are literally thrown into a situation where you know as much as the main characters. As much information you know is all that the main characters know, and you are stuck in a situation where it is do or die time, or else humanity will fall. People who love being on the edge of your seat will love this anime. It’s survival at its best, mind, strength and loyalty will be tested in this situation. How will humanity overcome the obstacle that is known as Titans?

Well that’s my list. I hope this gives you an idea of what Anime to watch. For those that are new to the Anime Fandom or are looking to see why people love Anime so much, watch these series/movies and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Don’t like my list? Well you can take that opinion and…-clears throat- you can take that opinion and let us know what your favorite anime is, or even your own pinion on the list I’ve given. Just remember, everyone has a different opinion and if you think Mirai Nikki sucks well you can…-clears throat-  be kind when sharing your opinions. =D.
