Best Conventions I Visited This Year

As a geek journalist, I’ve visited a lot of Las Vegas’ conventions in hope of spreading the word in my local community. Let me tell you this; California is obviously known for their amazing nerd conventions, but nothing will ever compare to how Vegas does it. I mean, we’re a party capital! You know we have fun things to do whether you’re at the con or not.

This year, I visited some of our popular conventions; Sabakon, The Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con and Otakon Vegas. These conventions were amazing and also embodied the Vegas community that I’d like to share with you today.

Otakon Vegas 2017

Otakon was exactly what you’d expect from Las Vegas; right on The Strip. There many cosplayers you couldn’t tell who was an entertainer and who was a convention goer. There were a lot of things I loved about this convention; the cultural activities, the games/shows, the visiting artists and even the food was all things that made this convention amazing.

Whenever I think of conventions now, I think of Otakon. They picked an awesome venue, Planet Hollywood, which if you’re ever in Las Vegas you should definitely go to convention or not. It was easy to get to food places and you really felt like you were celebrating your fandom in the city you’re from! The panels and guests were also top notch.

Of course we had voice actors visiting for panels and signatures, but we also had sumo wrestling and fun games/contests. One of Vegas’ most popular events is Lip Sing for Your Cosplay. The host is always fabulous and everyone has so much fun. I think having it at Planet Hollywood just made you feel like a star.

Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con

Comic Con is not what people often know Las Vegas for. Of course, it’s nowhere near as big as San Diego’s, but we still had some big names and exciting entertainment to show for it. I mean, the Stan Lee was there! You can’t get any better than that for a convention.

And yes, while this is a comic book convention, there were a lot of anime fans and booths present. You could really feel that the nerd community as a whole, no matter what their initial interest, was all there to have fun and support one another. Based at the Convention Center, which is our largest convention centers, there was space for every nerd and vendor you could think of. Local artists to big names and voice actors, like Ash from Pokemon, were in attendance for a day of just all-out geeking. And seeing Stan Lee up close in person is something I’ll never forget.

Sabakon 2017

Sabakon is a locally-grown convention here in Las Vegas. It’s not connected to any larger convention like Otakon and Comic Con and was actually the first convention I ever went to when I was in high school. I’ve made a point to go to every Sabakon since, and this last year was no different. As a local Las Vegan, I was really proud to see how much this convention has grown.

With a new venue at the Tuscany, Sabakon greeted guests with amazing vendors and cool panels. There were the ever-popular K-pop battles, where teams who’ve trained for this moment show fans what they’re made of in an epic dance battle, and even a board game room, which is always a nice place to chill out if you have some down time before your next event. The more this convention grows, the prouder I get to be able to say I’ve been a part of the Las Vegas fandom community for so many years.

So, what were your favorite conventions that you attended this year?
