Digimon Adventure tri.: “Reunion” — First Impression
After much waiting and anticipation, the first installment of Digimon Adventure tri., “Reunion” premiered on Crunchyroll. And honestly, it was worth the wait.
While watching the first four episodes, all I thought about is that “I’m re-living my childhood.”
First of all, I appreciated that they revamped the original Digimon Adventure songs, which further brings in nostalgic feelings to the audience. As for the art, the new character designs and background appearances are clean and refreshing. They still kept the same layout and feel from the original series, but they made it more modern and it fits with today’s anime scene.
I heard that some people were skeptic about the character designs for the DigiDestined. At first glance, one may think the main cast’s facial features are a little dull and emotionless. In fact, one could go as far as to say that they all have the same face with just different hairstyles. However, I wasn’t bothered by it really, and as soon as the first episode aired, I gotten used to how the Digidestined look. As for the Digimon, they are still adorable and cute as ever. Also, if you haven’t noticed, I think Birdramon got an upgrade because now she glows as oppose to just being colored orange.
Moreover, I loved how Digimon Adventure tri. just dived into the drama and complications of being a teenager. In Digimon Adventure 02, we saw the love triangle between Taichi “Tai” Yagami, Yamato “Matt” Ishida, and Sora Takenouchi, and in this series, we see the continuation of that. I feel so bad for Taichi because he didn’t end up with Sora from what we saw at the end of Digimon Adventure 02, but I have high hopes that the new girl, Meiko, could possibly be his girlfriend. (Yes, I’m aware that I’m already shipping characters together.) Also, since when did Koushiro “Izzi” Izumi have a crush on Mimi Tachikawa? That was new to me, but I can see it happening. I think my one true pair in the Digimon franchise is Takeru “T.K.” Takaishi and Hikari “Kari” Yagami. Will they get together? I highly doubt it, but I can dream. We shall see if they will change the pairings at the end of Digimon Adventure 02 within this series.
Furthermore, it’s great to be able to watch these DigiDestined—that we grew up with when we were just kids—trying to figure out the world around them and becoming more mature and grown up. The character development is continuing on right after the second season, Digimon Adventure 02, ended. At the end of the second episode of Digimon Adventure tri., we get a bickering Taichi and Yamato, just like old times. As usual, Taichi is acting like a coward, afraid to lead the DigiDestined into battle, and Yamato is yelling at him to pull himself together and fight. It is moments like these where we see our favorite characters still struggling with their inner demons, but it is what makes them realistic and appealing heroes. Although there is no resolution to this fight as of right now, we can only hope that Taichi will be able to overcome his fears and lead the DigiDestined.
This is only the first installment of a six-part film series. So we can’t expect much from the first four episodes, but it does set up the main plot story. There is a new enemy, Alphamon, threatening the digital and human worlds, and the DigiDestined must unite and stop this Digimon. There is also a new DigiDestined joining the crew, Meiko and her Digimon, Meicoomon. Yet we are left wondering at the end of episode four, why Alphamon is targeting Meiko and Meicoomon? Also, who are these “secret service men” which includes Taichi’s teacher, Mr. Nishijima? Can they be trusted? All these questions just leave me with excitement for the next installment of the series.
Overall, I enjoyed the first part of Digimon Adventure tri. It is an anime that the fans of Digimon Adventure can appreciate, and can also bring in new fans of the franchise too. I don’t think I can wait for the next part!
