The Inaugural 2017 “Unime” Awards!
Best in Action
Re:Creators was one of my favorite shows of the Spring and Summer seasons of 2017. Flipping the classic Isekai plot upside-down, it featured characters from Movies, Games, Anime, Manga, and Light Novels, and putting them into a battle royale against each other. Characters from Magical Girl shows, fantasy, sci-fi, and more all mingle in an amazing mix of characters. With a Hiroyuki Sawano soundtrack bringing endless hype, as well as gorgeous visuals and some insane, beautifully choreographed fights, this is one of the best Action shows I’ve seen in recent years.
Re:Creators manages to both stomp on and fully embrace Isekai tropes, and on top of that, throw them into the real world. Not only is the concept of your favorite anime, manga, and light novel characters being brought into the real world an interesting concept in it of itself, but it is executed excellently. The visuals are phenomenal, the characters are intriguing, and the fight scenes are intense, and feel like they matter. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed both the concept and story of a show as much as I have with this one.
Fate series has been on my watch list for a long time, but this year I finally gave it a try. Seeing there was a new Fate anime coming out I set out to view all the previous ones first and I’m glad I did. It helped me quickly understand the world of Fate/Apocrypha, as the anime itself doesn’t really explain all that much. Unfortunately Apocrypha lacks in certain aspects compared to the previous ones, but the one thing they do well is action. The design, artwork and animation complement each other well. Let’s not forget the sound design as well, amping up the epic moments and making sure you can thoroughly enjoy the massacre in front of your eyes.
