Little Witch Academia
Little Witch Academia is a show that I went into having no prior knowledge of, and I went in somewhat hesitantly. Boy, am I glad that I did. I don’t think I’ve ever had a show give me such a sense of giddy, childish wonder before. The characters were interesting, the story was great… pretty much everything was as solid as could be… but the MAGIC… it was truly Magical. Sure, so many shows have magic systems, witches, spellcasters and more, but there’s something about LWA that really sets it apart as one of the most unique, interesting, and magical shows of the year.
At first it seemed like an anime I would probably consider too childish. I ended up thoroughly enjoying it and would recommend it to anyone! The presentation, character developments, the story are all very well done. What makes it stand out among supernatural anime of the year is their presentation of magic and the omnipresent sense of wonder. I feel like most of us lack that sort of naive and straightforward sense of fascination. It’s nice to experience it again sometimes.
As with comedy, most supernatural anime never seem to hit that sweet spot that I want and expect them to. I want to enjoy the vast majority of the supernatural shows I see, but I never really find any of them to be great, I just see some mediocre ones. But when I went into Chaos;Child, I was enthralled by the mystery. Though, I was admittedly a little let down by the show overall, this show stood out to me this year, and I still recommend it to my friends when they ask me to list some shows to watch. Though I’m sure there were better picks to put here, I can’t help but feel like it’d be wrong and dishonest of me to say that this show didn’t generate more interest in me than any other supernatural show this year. That’s why it’s my pick, despite its flaws.
