Wacky Wednesdays – Teekyu, Anime on Weed

This is a new feature that is one part of a new initiative that the blog is starting.  Every day has a feature attributed to it and the names of these features will be the lamest possible alliterations we can think of.  For Wednesday, it’s “Wacky”.  “Wacky Wednesdays” involves a review of a wacky, weird and/or whimsical show.  Pretty simple.  This week, I’m reviewing Teekyu, and in the spirit of the shows minuscule nature (2 min. episodes), I will keep this brief.

Alright, Teekyu.  Hmm, how do I put this?  My first thought after watching this show was, “So this is what animators make when they get high.”  Basically, Teekyu is about a group of girls who do everything imaginable, whilst being in a setting that would make one assume that they were about to play tennis.  However, seeing as how they are girls in an anime, doing what the scenery demands of them is hardly the correct course of action.  Therefore, we get strange movements like you see above, or breaks for oxygen-inhaling, or complaints about the Japanese government.  Either way, there is little to no actual tennis in this show.  If someone told you that this would might be a good alternative to Prince of Tennis, then you are the butt of a very sad joke.

The presentation of the show, in terms of artwork and pacing, add to this almost hallucinatory effect.  This is a gag show, and so the pace is sped up accordingly.  The pacing is sporadic and works with the 4-koma style punchlines to make the show quick and simple.  Overall, Teekyu does it’s job as a fast and entertaining alternative to commercial breaks between Japanese game shows.

So what you want to know in the end is, should you watch Teekyu?  Well, do you have a little time to waste?  Are you in need of a bunch of quick-fire gags?  Does normal, smooth animation not suit your tastes?  Are you high?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, give Teekyu a shot.  Oh, and every time you here something that has nothing to do with tennis, take a shot.  I guarantee blackout in no time.

That’s it for this one.  Really quick and easy.  Hope you liked it, and look forward to one for each day of the week.  Have a great day!
